Learn some of the tips included in this article so you can make a garden that everyone can enjoy. Here you will find out the basic equipment and general techniques that are used in gardening so that your efforts are effective and efficient.

Pay attention to how you lay sod. Before laying the sod, have your soil prepared. Get rid of weeds and tilth the soil finely. When the soil is clean, pack it tightly and create a flat surface. Afterward, you want to make sure the soil is moistened. Then lay the sod in staggered rows so the joints are offset. You want the sod to end up as a flat and even surface. If there are any gaps in between the sod pieces, then you can fill these in with some soil. Water the sod everyday for the first two weeks until the roots grow enough.

To prevent your plants from getting shocked by a big change, get them gradually used to climate and temperature changes. Place them outdoors in the sun for about an hour or two on the first day. Over the week, try gradually increasing the time they’re left outside. By the end of the week, your plants should be ready to make the big move with no problem!

Use the handles of your tools as a handy ruler when doing your outdoor chores. Tools with long handles, such as shovels, hoes and rakes can be made into measuring sticks. Just lay your tool down on the floor then lay a yardstick beside the handle. Mark the measurements with a permanent marker. When you are at work in the garden, you will always have a handy measuring device on each and every tool.

Do not plant perennials that are prone to snail infestation. Slugs or snails can kill a plant very quickly. They often enjoy feeding on perennials with very smooth and tender leaves. Young plants are a special favorite of theirs. Perennials with hairy leaves or bitter taste are unattractive to snails and slugs, keeping them safe from harm. These varieties include achillea, helleborus, heuchera, euphorbia, and campanula.

If you would like to have flowers in your garden that last through the spring and summer seasons, plant bulbs. Bulbs are hearty and will continue to grow every year. The types of bulbs you use will determine the time of year your flowers will bloom, giving you the pleasure of blooms from spring to summer, if you plant them right.

When mowing your lawn, be careful not to cut the grass too far down. If you let your grass keep some height after mowing, it will be able to absorb more sun and moisture resulting in a lusher, greener lawn. If you keep your lawn too short, the roots will not go deep enough to survive in case of a heat wave.

A little bit of research will go a long way, especially when you pair it with patience. You will feel a sense of reward when you start seeing how you made something grow from nothing.
